If you’re a Type A personality with a strong motivation to achieve in sports, business or life, the answer is a resounding YES! Dr. Landrum, who has dedicated his life to the study of eminence in business and sports, asserts that what separates the eminent from the also-rans resides in the head and the heart. Athletic eminence in particular is more about mental and emotional dispositions than about physical talent or inherited genes. Preeminent athletes, Michael Jordan, Pelé, Wayne Gretzky, and Tiger Woods all agree that winning resides in the brain. Recent research in brain physiology and kinetics reveals why this is so–athletic performance is a consequence of a holistic mind-body interaction. Quoting from a plethora of recent studies, Dr. Landrum argues that those who are preoccupied with the mechanics of any skill, miss out on the essence.
The behavioral principles and emotional dispositions that account for exceptional performance in athletics also apply to achieving success in business and life. Empowerment: The Competitive Edge in Sports, Business & Life is about growing inwardly to find success outwardly. In this inspirational, cutting-edge look at the psychological determinants of success, Landrum profiles the thirteen greatest athletes of the 20th century who rose to the very top of their sport and dominated it like few others in history. He captures in each profile the human drama that traces their early imprints and motivations, through their psychological struggles to their ultimate triumphs. The focus is not on athletic prowess, but rather on what makes superstars tick–their key qualities and behavioral traits.

Story Telling with Interwoven Life and Business Lessons All Wrapped into One Book
Dr. Landrum has written a series of wonderful stories about sports icons and their triumphs but also their tragedies. This book is masterful story telling at its best. The topic of each chapter is skillfully set up to relate directly to the athlete and how they used this topic skillfully in their sport to triumph and become the legend that they are.
Dr. Landrum writes not only how the athlete achieved success but the back story on the hurdles, barriers, and personal struggles that each athlete had to overcome in order to achieve success. The story telling comes alive where the reader can feel the emotions and struggles almost as if we are going through it now.
The 13 Principles that are discussed in this book are helpful for anyone that is pursuing their dreams and overcoming all odds to win in sports, business and life.
