Lewis Carroll: He Saw Life through a “Magic” Lens

Lewis Carroll 1832 – 1898

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who wrote under the pen name Lewis Carroll, was born on January 27, 1832 in Cheshire, England. At an early age, he was discovered to be mathematically gifted and was reading books such as Pilgrims Progress at age 7.

In 1865 his first work, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published, and this was followed in 1869 by Through the Looking Glass. Carroll’s writings revealed his deep interest in mathematical logic. We see in both of these classic works, he exploration of logical contradiction–also evident in his famous poem, The Walrus and the Carpenter.

Many mind-boggling stanzas follow that challenge adults and children alike, reminding us that we live in a world of  internal contradictions.
